The Cyclades Islands
About our sailing area
Our catamaran FO'S is based on the island of Mykonos, which is located in the middle of the Cyclades Islands. If you are taking a week-long trip, the Cyclades islands are your closest destination. What characterizes these islands? The strong north wind, called meltemi, the green-blue waters, the white square houses with the multicolored flowers, the strong sun, and the blue sky at every hour of the day. You can reach Mykonos by plane from Athens (a one-hour flight) or ferry from Piraeus.
The Cyclades are one of the Greek island groups that constitute the Aegean archipelago, southeast of mainland Greece. Cyclades, because of their geographical position, between mainland, Asia, and Africa, were for centuries the bridge for the development of commerce and civilization.
The Cyclades comprise about 220 islands, the major ones being the following 24: Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Donousa, Iraklia, Thirasia, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Koufonisi, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Schinousa, Tinos and Folegandros. The climate is generally dry and mild, with mild winters and cool summers.
In fables, the Cyclades are connected with Poseidon in whom it is imputed their creation. It is said that they took their name from the nymphs Cyclades, whom the God of the sea transformed into islets when they provoked him. There are also other traditions about their name as for instance, from the word cycle, because they spread around Delos, the island where the god Apollo was born.
The islands of the Cyclades constitute a meeting point of people from all over the world. The Cyclades are full of geographical contrasts, history, landscapes of unique natural beauty, hospitality, local cuisine, traditions, and customs, presenting a culture of great significance. Holidays in Cyclades give the opportunity to have fun, to relax, to taste local food, to make romantic walks, and to enjoy the immense blue sea.
